Who would you consider the toughest pitcher you faced in your playing days?

Submitted By:
Bill Rudnik

Well, Herb Score of the Indians was pretty tough before he got injured. Another guy who wasn't easy was Alex Kellner, a lefthander with the A's. His teams weren't so good, but he was pretty good.    - Yogi

What do you think of the Tampa Bay Rays? Also, can you share one of your most memorable experiences in Yankee Stadium?

Submitted By:
Deno Sandriotis

Deno,
The Rays are young and good, and have good, young pitching. You have to like their future, and they're good now, too. On Yankee Stadium, I had a lot of great memorable experiences. Catching Don Larsen's perfect game in the World Series, that was a thrill. A no-hitter in the World Series, and a perfect game at that. Like I say, it's never happened before and never happened since.

Can you tell me how valuable Tommy Henrich was to your team and how good he really was?

Submitted By:
Tom Lazrine, a lifelong Yankee fan

Tom,
I was a teammate of Tommy only four years, the end of his career. He was great, though. People say he was underrated but he wasn't underrated to us. Did anything to help us win. Great hitter when it mattered most. And a great rightfielder. In 1949 he moved to first base and was great there, too. Heck, Tommy was a tremendous ballplayer.

What was it like growing up on The Hill? How often do you get back to the old neighborhood?

Submitted By:
Ryan Greis

Ryan,
What can I say? The Hill was and still is a great place. We had an awful lot of fun growing up there. Joe Garagiola was my best friend and lived right across the street. Everybody looked out for each other, it was real close-knit. St. Ambrose Church was and still is the big thing there, and where I also got married. There's still a lot of pride in the neighborhood and I try to get back there at least once or twice a year.

What was it like to play in the major leagues and doing what you did for a living?

Submitted By:
Trevelyan Bradshaw
  1. Trevelyan,

It was great. Like I always say, where else could you "work" for three hours and make that kind of money, although we didn't make much in those days. Playing ball was a dream and all I wanted to do. - Yogi

I noticed a lot of young players chew gum in their neighborhood pick up games and in the youth leagues. Isn't that a bad idea?

Submitted By:
Adam
Adam,
I'm no expert on this, but I knew a lot of guys who chewed when they played. Maybe it kept them from a dry mouth. Maybe it helped them concentrate. If it helps, maybe it's not a bad idea.
