Museum Offers Triple Play for Students, Parents, Coaches

As state budgets have slashed funding for character education, the need for it has not diminished. Judging by what is chronicled in the media daily, much more needs to be done to promote good sportsmanship in youth athletics, especially in school systems which have no funding available for effective concerns.

At the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center, we believe that Yogi's character is his legacy, not his Hall of Fame credentials. Yogi is the embodiment of all that can be gained by participating in sports. And the values he’s always lived by – integrity, respect, perseverance and humility – are more important than ever.

To that end, the YBMLC recently created a Triple-Play Initiative to help student-athletes, coaches and parents get the most out of their participation in sports. We are offering at least 10 seminars a year for athletes and their coaches, and three evening panels for parents which coincide with the start of each new sports season.

The Triple-Play Initiative goals include:
  • To enable young athletes to attain leadership skills and to exhibit sportsmanship.
  • To  provide coaches with the latest motivational and communication tools in order to help their players reach their true potential
  • To provide parents with a road map for navigating their student/athletes through the maze of high school and college athletics

Endorsed by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA), the Museum’s seminars do the following:

Conduct interactive workshops with athletes using team-building activities.

Provide athletes with practical guidelines for developing leadership capability.

Conduct seminars for coaches on improving communication with athletes and parents.

Provide coaches with the latest print and video material dealing with motivation and coaching strategies.

Conduct panel discussions, for parents, consisting of college coaches and professional athletes, which deal with recruiting and scholarship potential.

Provide parents with strategies for empowering their student/athletes and ways they can best support them.
